Football Integration Development Association (FIDA)
KIO and FIDA have collaborated to reduce the incidence of violent or unsociable behaviour by participants engaged by FIDA or its respective Australian Rules Football Clubs. FIDA aims to provide, oversee and develop a program of Australian Football for people with an intellectual disability throughout Victoria. Players involved in FIDA enjoy an environment that promotes fitness, fun, friendship and a rare sense of belonging.
However to ensure this remains a safe environment for all participants KIO and FIDA have implemented a range of interventions to ensure all activities are appropriately supervised and participants educated on appropriate behaviour.
AFL Trainers Association
KIO are responsible for development and management of the Australian Football League Trainers Association (AFLTA). The AFLTA deliver a range of advocacy and education services to current and prospective sports trainers and first aiders working in Australian Sport. AFLTA works in conjunction with AFL clubs and Sports Medicine Australia to provide ongoing accreditation to its members or those wishing to become involved in the provision of sports safety. AFLTA and KIO have a specific interest in providing opportunities to individuals in regional areas or those who may not have access to mainstream services yet are faced with the same sports safety risks as those with more readily available support.
We first engaged KIO to work specifically with clubs that were having trouble managing the behaviours of some of their players. The team at KIO did a great job of engaging those players and supporting them to make better decisions both on and off the field. A number of the players KIO worked with have now moved into employment which is a fantastic outcome. Recently KIO have begun working with clubs in the creation of strong club cultures and building supportive environments. The FIDA competition is certainly better off for having engaged the team from KIO.
